Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

Commonly known as e-waste, comprises discarded electronic devices that have reached the end of their lifecycle. Despite being labeled as “waste”, many of these items contain precious metals. This category of waste is considered the fastest-growing waste stream globally, projected to reach 74 million tons by 2030. Electronic scrap components also contain potentially harmful substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, beryllium, or brominated flame retardants posing environmental and health risks if not managed properly. WEEE encompasses a diverse range of electronic devices including:

  • Large household appliances
  • Small household appliances
  • IT equipment
  • Consumer electronics
  • Lamps and luminaires
  • Toys and leisure equipment
  • Tools and machinery
  • Medical devices and equipment
  • Monitoring and control instruments
  • Automatic dispensers
